Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (Census)

The Census SAIPE program provides annual modeled estimates of income and poverty using survey and administrative records for school districts, counties, and states.

OverviewMethodology,Data Sources for ModelFAQ

For the Median Household Income (MHI), the best numbers for county level and smaller geographies are the Census’ Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE). This data series uses additional federal data beyond but including the ACS household survey to derive the income numbers. It’s also available for a single year estimate at the county level as opposed to the ACS 5 year estimate.

Here's the Census' explanation why SAIPE is better than ACS for MHI for counties: Use SAIPE for County MHI
